An ICE officer, Christian Castro, pleaded not guilty in a Texas federal court to six charges of making false statements to investigators about a January shooting in Minneapolis in which a Venezuelan man was wounded. The case has drawn scrutiny amid the Trump administration's immigration enforcement crackdown, and has also triggered a legal dispute after Texas Governor Greg Abbott refused to extradite Castro to Minnesota, where he faces separate charges.

Prosecutors say Castro shot Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in the leg on 14 January after a vehicle stop escalated into a foot chase and struggle with another Venezuelan man, who fled with Sosa-Celis into an apartment where two women and two one-year-old children were present. Castro allegedly told investigators he was attacked with a broom and snow shovel and was on his back when he fired, but video evidence contradicted this, showing he was standing and that the struggle lasted around 11 seconds rather than the three minutes he claimed. He turned himself in on Thursday and was released on a $75,000 unsecured bond with an ankle monitor.
