## Key points

- Omar’s appearance with Hasan Piker drew criticism from fellow Minnesota Democrats.
- Jewish community leaders said the event harmed the public and betrayed Jewish Minnesotans.
- Piker apologised for saying the US “deserved 9/11”, calling his wording inappropriate.

## Summary

Ilhan Omar appeared with political streamer Hasan Piker at a Minneapolis voter-mobilisation event, prompting criticism from Minnesota Democrats and Jewish community leaders. The dispute matters because critics say sharing a stage lends credibility to Piker, whose comments have repeatedly drawn accusations of antisemitism and other hateful rhetoric.

The event, hosted by state Senator Omar Fateh, aimed to engage voters under 40, whose early voting numbers are down. State Senator Ron Latz led colleagues in condemning the invitation, while the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas called it harmful to the public and a betrayal of Jewish Minnesotans. Piker previously said the US “deserved 9/11”, later apologising for that wording and saying he did not believe those killed deserved to die; he argues critics take provocative remarks out of context.
