## Key points

- Ilhan Omar has won another term in Congress.
- She led John Nagel 76 per cent to 16 per cent.
- Allegations about her marriage remain under investigation.

## Summary

Ilhan Omar has won re-election in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, retaining her seat as a prominent progressive Democrat despite Republican attacks and renewed attention to allegations about her 2009 marriage. Omar denies claims that she married her alleged brother to help him obtain US immigration status; the Justice Department is investigating the matter.

With 94 per cent of votes counted, Omar had 76 per cent to Republican challenger John Nagel’s 16 per cent. The Minneapolis-area district has a strong Democratic voting history, and a forecast had given Omar a 99 per cent chance of victory. Nagel campaigned on tackling fraud and strengthening border enforcement, while Omar emphasised wages, housing, healthcare, immigrant rights and student debt relief.
