A Cuban woman in Miami has been charged with child abuse, child neglect and arson after authorities alleged that she poured hot candle wax on a young daughter and started a fire inside her home while her children were present. The case has prompted a court-ordered assessment of her mental competency, while immigration authorities have requested notice before any release from custody.

The charges relate to an incident reported on 16 August involving Campos-Sanchez and her daughters, aged three and six. Investigators cited social-media videos allegedly showing melted wax being poured on herself and a child, and clothing being lit in the kitchen; one child reportedly told detectives she saw her mother burn a shirt. The child whose hand was allegedly exposed to wax had no visible injuries, and relatives said Campos-Sanchez had previously received mental-health medication but stopped taking it.
