## Key points

- Retired detective warns Brand could be at risk in prison.
- Staff may struggle to guarantee his safety.
- Brand denies the charges; two further allegations are being investigated.

## Summary

Russell Brand is being held in custody ahead of sentencing on Monday, and a retired Scotland Yard detective has warned that his fame and the nature of the allegations could put him at risk from other prisoners. Mike Neville said prison staff may struggle to guarantee his safety, particularly if he is moved out of a unit where he can be closely monitored.

Neville said Brand may be held in a care and support unit, potentially in solitary confinement, because he is too well known to be placed with other prisoners. He described basic cell conditions and warned that prisoners serving long sentences might target a celebrity accused of sex offences. Brand denies the charges; his legal team says he was wrongly accused and alleges a media conspiracy. Two further allegations are under investigation.
