## Summary

Alanis Morissette was robbed at gunpoint shortly after moving to Los Angeles in 1994, but the thief left behind her backpack, including early lyrics and recordings for what would become *Jagged Little Pill*. The following day, she met Madonna at Maverick Records and was encouraged by the pop star’s generous spirit to take a chance on signing with the label.

Morissette had released two albums in Canada, with modest success, before moving to pursue a wider career. *Jagged Little Pill* came out in 1995 and became her breakthrough, turning the difficult start in Los Angeles into a pivotal moment in her career.
