## Key points

- Theron rejected two sexually explicit film roles in 1994.
- She parted ways with her manager, John Crosby.
- She wanted to avoid being typecast as a sex symbol.

## Summary

In 1994, early in her acting career, Charlize Theron rejected auditions for *Showgirls* and *Species* and fired her manager, John Crosby. She felt the parts risked defining her as a sex symbol rather than allowing her to be taken seriously as an actor.

The article says Theron had appeared in only one feature film at the time, *Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest*, where her voice was dubbed. *Showgirls* was rated NC-17 and later became a cult film despite its poor box office, while *Species* featured extensive nudity and went on to earn more than $100 million in cinemas. Theron later said the scripts showed her where Crosby thought her career should go.
