## Key points

- Maguire’s scenes in *Empire Records* were cut.
- Ethan Embry recalled meeting him at an audition.
- The reason for his absence from the finished film remains unclear.

## Summary

Tobey Maguire was reportedly cast in the 1995 coming-of-age film *Empire Records*, but his scenes were cut and the extent of his involvement remains unclear. The story matters because the film later gained a cult following, while Maguire went on to become a prominent actor, making his apparently missing role a lasting curiosity.

The film follows teenage record-shop workers trying to stop their store being bought by a chain, and featured Renée Zellweger, Liv Tyler and Ethan Embry. Embry recalled seeing Maguire at an audition and sharing a cigarette with him, but could not remember him being in North Carolina during filming; suggestions that addiction issues affected his role remain unconfirmed in the account.
