## Key points

- Stiles received racist abuse over two 2001 film roles.
- Columbia University was contacted with threats.
- Both films placed interracial romance at the centre of their stories.

## Summary

In 2001, Julia Stiles starred in *Save the Last Dance* and *O*, both of which featured her in an interracial romance. She later said the roles prompted hateful messages, showing that such relationships remained provocative to some viewers despite the films’ different settings and stories.

Stiles was studying at Columbia University, which received threatening calls from parents and suggested she have security accompany her on campus. She recalled one caller using a racist slur and said the abuse would not change her work. *Save the Last Dance* follows a ballet dancer rebuilding her passion with help from a Black classmate, while *O*, inspired by *Othello*, centres on racial prejudice and isolation.
