Quaz Degraft’s solo drama In the Black follows Kofi Grady, a first-generation Ghanaian American graduate drawn into the lucrative but morally compromised world of high finance. The review finds it a rewarding, subtly staged examination of how corporate ambition encourages silence, particularly around abuse, making a familiar critique of male power feel immediate and personal.

Drawing on Degraft’s own former career in finance, the play depicts a culture where staff are expected to work hard, conform and overlook wrongdoing in exchange for status and bonuses. Kofi is not accused of assault but becomes complicit in concealing an attack on a female colleague, framing the production as a #MeToo story from a male perspective; Abigail Onwunali’s stripped-back production runs at Underbelly, Bristo Square until 31 August.
