Alexa Turner, a nine-year-old from Alabama, will receive a bone marrow transplant from her 13-year-old brother Amari, which could potentially cure her severe sickle cell anemia. Alexa has suffered from the condition since infancy, enduring repeated hospitalisations, monthly blood transfusions and even silent strokes. This transplant represents a significant opportunity to free her from the chronic pain and complications of the disease.

The procedure will begin in November 2026, with surgery scheduled for January 2027. All five of Alexa's siblings were tested to identify a suitable donor, and Amari was confirmed as a match. Following the transplant, Alexa will undergo chemotherapy and radiation, then require strict quarantine for at least nine months whilst her immune system rebuilds, and will need to be homeschooled for a year. Her parents will need to make significant adjustments, with her mother taking time away from her beauty salon business to support her daughter's recovery.
