Indian activist Sonam Wangchuk has ended a 26-day hunger strike backing youth-led demands for education reform, following negotiations and assurances that protesters would not face legal action. His decision may reduce immediate concerns over his health and further violence, but the protest movement says it will continue until Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns.

Wangchuk, 59, said he had lost 11kg during the fast and was taken to hospital after being removed from a Delhi protest site. The Cockroach Janta Party began online in May over examination paper leaks and irregularities, then grew into a major youth movement after a medical entrance exam was cancelled; recent clashes during a march to parliament injured scores of protesters and police officers.
