## Key points

- Democrats made sweeping midterm gains across the country.
- Results suggest a backlash against the Trump administration.
- Affordability and corruption helped shape the Democratic message.

## Summary

Democrats scored sweeping gains in the midterm elections, including Senate victories in Kansas and South Carolina and wins in major statewide contests across Texas. Astead Herndon described the result as a strong rejection of the Trump administration, leaving the president with two years in office and heightened responsibility for Republican losses.

The results included gains in Iowa and Florida, and voting shifts towards Democrats across demographic groups compared with 2024. Herndon said affordability, concerns about artificial intelligence and corruption helped shape the campaign, while warning that the results do not guarantee Democrats an easy path to the White House in 2028. Republican-friendly district maps still limited the scale of Democratic gains, though Democrats won some seats drawn for Republicans.
