## Key points

- Emails show district officials had anticipated the dispute.
- More than 35 girls were cut from the volleyball programme.
- Staff were left to handle parent concerns without prepared guidance.

## Summary

Internal emails from Jefferson County Public Schools show that district leaders had discussed a transgender athlete joining Dakota Ridge High School’s girls’ junior varsity volleyball team weeks before the controversy became public. The records appear to conflict with the district’s later description of the situation as unfamiliar, and indicate that staff were not given the guidance they had been promised.

The dispute followed tryouts in which more than 35 girls were cut, including some who had previously made the team. Parents raised concerns about fairness and privacy in the girls’ changing room; district staff suggested brief replies and separate changing spaces, but those measures did not resolve the concerns. Athletic director Jeff Legault’s 6 October email described staff facing angry calls and questions without an approved script.
