International Insider: Venice Lineup Analysis; Rebel Wilson Legal Victory; Lisa Nandy, Troublemaker-In-Chief

Deadline · 2 hours ago

Venice has unveiled its 83rd festival line-up amid renewed discussion about the limited presence of major Hollywood studio films, continuing a pattern seen at Cannes and Berlin. Artistic director Alberto Barbera said he had pursued several high-profile titles but argued it was too soon to conclude that Hollywood had abandoned film festivals; the selection remains notable for its political and star-led films.

Competition titles include works from Lee Chang-Dong, Hirokazu Koreeda, Martin McDonagh and Lance Oppenheim, while performers expected in Venice include Robert Pattinson, Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Alicia Vikander and Susan Sarandon. The line-up has also drawn criticism over gender representation: Danish-Egyptian director May-el Toukhy is the only woman among the 20 competition filmmakers, with Barbera attributing this to the available submissions and saying the decline was difficult to explain.

  • Venice’s line-up lacks major studio films again.
  • Star-led international films remain prominent.
  • Only one woman directs a competition film.
