An eye for an eye documentary secures Oscar-qualifying US release through Jolt Film
The Iranian documentary "An Eye for an Eye" has been acquired by New York-based, AI-driven distributor Jolt Film for an Oscar-qualifying release in the United States. Co-directed by Iranian-born American filmmaker Tanaz Eshaghian and Iran-based Farzad Jafari, the film follows a Tehran woman named Tahereh who killed her drug-addicted, abusive husband in self-defence, and it matters as a rare cinematic examination of domestic violence, patriarchal values and religious law within Iran's justice system.
Unable to divorce her husband despite suffering life-threatening abuse, Tahereh served a 14-year prison sentence and now faces execution unless she can pay the "blood money" demanded by his family, with her son Mohsen fighting to save her. The film won a Special Jury Mention and Best Editing at the 2025 Tribeca Festival and has screened at CPH:DOX and Fipadoc. Jolt plans a theatrical opening in Los Angeles on 12 August, expanding to qualify for the Academy Awards before moving to digital, while Journeyman Pictures handles rights outside North America.
