An Irish man in his 60s has been arrested near Marseille after allegedly making antisemitic remarks and threatening a Jewish Australian tourist in a supermarket near Avignon. The case has attracted wide attention after video of the confrontation circulated online, and French officials said it underscored the need to confront antisemitism firmly.

The footage reportedly records the man threatening to put a bullet in the woman’s head, while the tourists also allege he referred approvingly to Hitler and the Holocaust; those alleged remarks are not heard in the video. French law can impose up to five years’ imprisonment and a €45,000 fine for public expressions of antisemitic hatred, and the man remains in custody while police investigate possible charges.
