## Key points

- Several Oscar contenders centre gay lives and experiences.
- “Elsinore” and “Club Kid” explore different aspects of queer identity.
- An openly gay best actor Oscar winner would be a first.

## Summary

This year’s Oscar season is unusually centred on gay experiences, with several prominent contenders exploring queer lives, relationships and identity. The trend comes amid greater audience openness to queer stories and could bring a change in the Academy’s record: there has never been an openly gay winner of the best actor Oscar.

The films include Andrew Scott’s “Elsinore”, about actor Ian Charleson during the AIDS crisis, and “Club Kid”, in which Jordan Firstman plays a gay man adjusting to parenthood. Other contenders include “La Bola Negra”, which follows Spanish gay men across generations, and “Artificial”, featuring Andrew Garfield as a gay tech CEO. Together, they portray varied experiences, including intimacy, life in the closet, queer nightlife, joy and self-loathing.
