Isak finally arrives as Gakpo proves value to Liverpool

BBC Sport · 3 hours ago

Alexander Isak scored twice in the opening nine minutes as Liverpool beat newly promoted Ipswich Town 2-0, finally producing the kind of performance that had been expected of him since his £125m British record transfer from Newcastle United last summer. The result gave Liverpool their first Premier League win of the season and handed new manager Andoni Iraola his first victory since replacing the sacked Arne Slot, while also easing scrutiny on Isak, who had struggled badly following his acrimonious move to Anfield.

Cody Gakpo, who nearly left for Manchester City before that deal collapsed, provided the assists for both goals with pinpoint passes, underlining his value to the side. Isak's tally means he has already matched his entire Premier League goal return from last season, having managed only three league goals in 703 minutes after arriving out of condition and battling injuries. New £123m signing Bradley Barcola also impressed with a lively 26-minute debut, though the spotlight remained on Isak's clinical finishing and improved sharpness in behind Ipswich's defence.
