Israel charges settler over killing of Palestinian involved in Oscar-winning West Bank film
An Israeli settler has been formally charged following the fatal shooting of a Palestinian activist during a confrontation over land use in the West Bank. Odeh Hathaleen, a teacher and documentary filmmaker, was killed during an incident involving heavy machinery operated by settlers in a Palestinian village, prompting charges of reckless manslaughter alongside property damage and trespassing.
The prosecution marks a significant rarity in the Israeli legal system, representing the first such indictment in approximately three years. Human rights organisations characterised the development as exceptional within a context of widespread impunity for settler violence, noting that over 1,100 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers since late 2023, compared to roughly 40 Israelis killed by Palestinians. The defendant disputes the charges and contends his actions constituted lawful self-defence, whilst his legal team has challenged the prosecution's case.
