Israel withdraws support for embattled Fifa president Gianni Infantino

The Guardian · 3 hours ago

Israel's football association has withdrawn its support for Gianni Infantino's re-election as Fifa president, becoming the latest Uefa member to abandon him amid a growing internal revolt. The move follows Infantino's decision to sack chief operating officer Kevin Lamour, who had publicly criticised the president's World Cup sell-off plan, a sacking that has hardened opposition and is expected to intensify calls for Infantino to go in the coming days.

In a letter seen by the Guardian, Israel Football Association head Moshe Zuares cited an "unprecedented crisis of confidence" and a "profound, substantive, and principled" rift with Fifa's leadership, saying the board unanimously retracted its previous backing. The IFA joins England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland in withdrawing support, while Uefa vice-president Laura McAllister said Lamour's sacking "sends a deeply troubling message" and undermines efforts to reform Fifa after the Fifa Forward Enterprise scandal. Infantino had separately invested political capital in Israel-Palestine footballing relations, including a failed attempt to stage a joint photo at April's Fifa congress in Vancouver.
