## Key points

- Settlers took over eight homes near Jericho.
- Dozens fled after reported assaults and gunfire.
- A military closure is blocking humanitarian access.

## Summary

Israeli settlers seized eight Palestinian homes in Ein a-Duyuk a-Tahta, near Jericho, forcing dozens of residents to flee. The UN condemned the incident, saying settlers used live ammunition, assaulted residents and threw stones; people displaced by the takeover now lack adequate shelter, and a military closure is preventing aid workers from reaching them.

About 30 settlers took part on Wednesday. They say the homes were legally purchased, while Jericho’s governor says the sale documents are forged and the land belongs to the Palestinian Authority. The homes are in Area C, under Israeli control since the 1990s; more than 500,000 Israelis live in West Bank settlements, which are illegal under international law.
