## Key points

- HBO released a surprise 30-minute Halloween special.
- The episode is set centuries before Pennywise.
- Season 2 will take place in Depression-era Derry.

## Summary

HBO has surprise-released a 30-minute Halloween special for “It: Welcome to Derry”, set hundreds of years before the series’ events and Pennywise’s arrival. The release adds to the prequel series, which is based on Stephen King’s novel and expands on the two “It” films.

The first season is set in 1962 and follows Derry residents’ earlier encounters with the shape-shifting clown. HBO renewed the series for a second season in August; it will move back to 1935, during the Great Depression, and centre on the Bradley Gang massacre, when bank robbers stop in Derry to buy ammunition and encounter horror.
