Italian man who ditched his ‘illegal’ worker on the side of the road with his severed arm in a box after a farm accident is jailed for 16 years
An Italian farmer, Antonello Lovato, has been jailed for 16 years over the death of Satnam Singh, a 31-year-old undocumented Indian farm worker who was fatally injured in a machinery accident in June 2024. Rather than seeking medical help after Singh's arm was torn off and his legs crushed, Lovato abandoned the worker and his wife at the roadside, leaving the severed limb in a box. The case has drawn national attention in Italy and reignited debate over the exploitation and dangerous conditions faced by migrant labourers on the country's farms.
Singh died of his injuries two days later in a Rome hospital. Lovato, 39, was convicted of voluntary manslaughter with eventual intent; prosecutors had sought a 22-year term. At his trial he claimed he had "lost his head" at the sight of Singh bleeding and insisted he had not wanted him to die. The incident, which was covered live on Italian television, prompted thousands of Indian farm workers to demonstrate in the rural area south of Rome, demanding justice and an end to what they described as "slavery".
