ITV and BBC to screen full World Cup final half-time show despite time concerns

The Guardian · 2 hours ago

ITV and the BBC plan to broadcast the entire half-time show during Sunday’s World Cup final at the New York New Jersey Stadium, despite uncertainty over how long the interval will last. The decision matters because Fifa’s expanded entertainment plans have raised concerns about disruption to the match and about whether the governing body is stretching or breaching football’s usual rules on half-time.

Broadcasters are preparing for a break of 25 to 30 minutes, although the performance itself is expected to last about 11 minutes, with extra time needed to build and remove the stage on the pitch. The show has been curated by Chris Martin and is set to feature Madonna, Shakira and BTS, while Ifab’s laws say half-time should not exceed 15 minutes unless the referee permits it. Fifa has already increased pre-match entertainment throughout the tournament, and the final will also include a closing ceremony 90 minutes before kick-off with Robbie Williams and Jennifer Hudson.
