J.K. Simmons On WBD’s “Bizarre” Decision To Shelf ‘Batgirl’ Movie: “Maybe We’ll Never Know”

Deadline · 3 hours ago

Four years after Warner Bros. Discovery shelved the completed Batgirl film, actor J.K. Simmons has publicly criticised the studio's decision as "bizarre" and expressed a wish to see the movie released. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Simmons, who played Commissioner James Gordon, noted that the film had been abandoned despite reportedly receiving a decent test-audience score, calling it a business decision that he could not fully explain. His comments add to ongoing frustration among cast members and DC fans over a finished project that may never be seen.

Batgirl, directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, starred Leslie Grace as the Gotham City desk cop turned vigilante, alongside Brendan Fraser, Jacob Scipio, Ivory Aquino and Michael Keaton, who reprised his role as Bruce Wayne. The film was pulled from the HBO Max schedule amid the WBD merger as part of a wider purge of completed projects, which also included Scoob!: Holiday Haunt and Coyote vs. Acme — the latter having since found a distributor in Ketchup Entertainment. Simmons said the team "really had a good time making it" and believed it would be "a fun superhero movie", concluding with "Maybe we'll never know… Oh well."
