Jaissle learned a lot about life after tumour aged five

BBC Sport ·

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle says having a tumour at the age of five taught him how precious health is and helped him develop the resilience to overcome setbacks. His football career was later cut short by a serious knee injury, but he found a new sense of purpose in coaching, a path that has led him to the Premier League.

Jaissle, 38, moved from youth coaching at RB Leipzig to winning trophies with Red Bull Salzburg and Al-Ahli before taking charge at Newcastle. The club have won six of his first seven matches in all competitions, with their only defeat a 4-1 loss at Leeds; they have also managed major squad changes, including eight signings aged 24 or under, and injuries. Jaissle says the team has shown some of the elements he wants, while recognising there is still room to improve.

  • A childhood tumour shaped Jaissle’s outlook on life.
  • A knee injury ended his playing career.
  • He has won six of his first seven Newcastle matches.
