Jake Xerxes Fussell – “Boney” & “Boll Weevil”
Folk singer-songwriter Jake Xerxes Fussell has released two new tracks, "Boney" and "Boll Weevil," ahead of his forthcoming album *The Old Beloved Path*. The songs follow last month's announcement of the record and its lead single, a rendition of the American traditional "Rock Island Line," continuing Fussell's practice of reworking traditional folk material for a contemporary audience.
"Boney" is a maritime work song, or "short drag" chantey, that loosely recounts episodes from the life of Napoleon Bonaparte, drawing on earlier recordings by Sam Eskin and Paul Clayton. "Boll Weevil" draws on versions by Sid Selvidge, Charley Patton and Blind Willie McTell, with Fussell splicing together verses from several renditions to explore themes of encroachment and opportunism through the metaphor of the crop-destroying insect. *The Old Beloved Path* is due for release on 18 September via Fat Possum.
