## Key points

- Vance says the Iran war contributed to Republican midterm losses.
- He had privately advised Trump against the conflict.
- Vance links voter concerns to costs, inflation and foreign policy.

## Summary

New reporting says JD Vance privately advised Donald Trump against the Iran war before publicly blaming it for Republican midterm losses. His criticism comes as he weighs a possible 2028 presidential run and urges supporters to keep engaging in politics.

Vance said Trump voters wanted the war ended, greater focus on living costs and inflation, an “America first” approach and a changed relationship with Israel. He argued that supporters of the war should acknowledge its political cost, including the loss of the Senate for six years, while rejecting amnesty for undocumented immigrants and suggesting enforcement could focus more on employers. Trump said the war was partly to blame for the results but would make the same decision again to prevent Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon.
