## Key points

- Goldblum was snubbed for his lead role in *The Fly*.
- The film won its only Oscar, for makeup.
- He has still never received an acting nomination.

## Summary

Jeff Goldblum missed out on an Oscar nomination for his lead performance in David Cronenberg’s 1986 body horror film *The Fly*. The article argues that the Academy recognised the film’s makeup but overlooked the acting beneath it, reflecting the genre’s limited acceptance at the time.

Goldblum said he had tried to prepare himself for a snub, but learned the nominations while watching television in bed with Geena Davis. *The Fly* received one nomination, for Best Makeup, and won; the article suggests some older Academy voters may have avoided the film because of its gruesome scenes. It contrasts the omission with more recent recognition of horror, including Demi Moore’s nomination for *The Substance*, while noting Goldblum has still never received an acting Oscar nomination.
