Jeff Tweedy – “Real Magic” (Star Moles Cover)

Stereogum · 2 hours ago

Musician Jeff Tweedy has released a public cover of "Real Magic," a track by Philadelphia-based artist Star Moles (Emily Moales), highlighting the rising Historic New Jersey collective of which she is part. Tweedy, best known as the frontman of Wilco, regularly records song covers for his Starship Casual newsletter on Substack, though these are usually reserved for paying subscribers, making this a notable exception given its wider availability.

The cover comes from Moales' March-released album Highway To Hell, praised for its quirky, retro-tinted indie-pop style. Tweedy's connection to the scene deepened after Moales appeared alongside the Sullivan siblings at Wilco's Solid Sound festival. Speaking about the recording, made in a hotel room, Tweedy said he had to sing it in a lower register and admitted he likely missed some of the song's intricate melodic turns, but praised Moales' songwriting as "fun, funny, sweet, and touching." The cover is available to stream via Starship Casual.
