Grunge pioneer L7 bassist Jennifer Finch dies after brain cancer battle

Jennifer Finch, bassist for pioneering grunge band L7, has died aged 59 after battling brain cancer, the group confirmed in an emotional Instagram tribute on Saturday. Her death caps a rapid decline after what was initially expected to be a treatable diagnosis; complications led to multiple surgeries that left her with severe physical limitations requiring extensive care. L7 described her as a "sister" whose "fierce spirit, humour and boundless creativity" helped shape the band, and said the impact she had on music and everyone who knew her "cannot be measured".
Finch joined the Los Angeles band in 1987, two years after its formation, and became a defining presence during its early-1990s grunge heyday before leaving in 1996 as she got sober and grieved her father's death. She later fronted two more bands, OtherStarPeople and the Shocker, launched her own record label, Little Pusher Records, and built a career as a photographer, before rejoining L7 in 2015 for their 2019 reunion album Scatter the Rats. Her illness had forced her to withdraw from the US leg of the band's Last Hurrah Tour, and a GoFundMe was set up to cover her treatment costs and fund an archive of her creative work, including an unfinished project due for release next year.
