Variety · 3 hours ago

Netflix has commissioned a documentary about Jessica Simpson, with the project directed by Joe Pearlman, best known for his Netflix film "Robbie Williams". The film will explore the singer and entrepreneur's life and career, from her rise alongside contemporaries such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera to her later ventures as a businesswoman and author, reflecting Netflix's continued appetite for celebrity-focused documentary features.

Simpson has sold more than 20 million records and starred in MTV's pioneering reality series "Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica" with then-husband Nick Lachey, which aired from 2003 to 2005. She has since built a billion-dollar fashion brand, written the bestselling memoir "Open Book", returned to music last year with two "Nashville Canyon" EPs, and appeared in the drama "All's Fair". Pearlman, a BAFTA, Emmy and Grammy-nominated filmmaker also behind "Lewis Capaldi: How I'm Feeling Now" and the recent Netflix series "Mourinho", will direct, while former MTV Networks chief Van Toffler produces through his company Gunpowder & Sky.
