Jewish House Democrat recalls colleague saying there is no antisemitism because ‘all the Jews are rich’
Rep. Becca Balint (D-Vt.), a Jewish congresswoman, told CNN that an unnamed House Democratic colleague dismissed the existence of antisemitism during a bipartisan task force meeting by claiming "all the Jews are rich." The remarks, reported by Fox News, matter because they come from within the Democratic Party and highlight growing concerns among Jewish Democrats about rising antisemitism linked to grassroots and progressive campaigns.
Balint was among several Jewish Democratic politicians who spoke to CNN about the issue, saying she was "shaken to [her] core" after seeing California state Sen. Scott Wiener heckled by anti-Israel activists over his support for Israel and his Jewish heritage. Although Balint has agreed with progressive claims that Israel is committing "genocide" in Gaza, she said she still fears a "day of reckoning" from her own supporters because she continues to back a two-state solution and believes Jews should have a safe and secure homeland.
