## Key points

- Jim Jordan is running to lead House Republicans in the minority.
- Steve Scalise is expected to challenge him.
- The winner will help shape the party’s response to Democratic investigations.

## Summary

Jim Jordan is seeking to lead House Republicans after election losses are expected to hand control of the chamber to Democrats. The contest could shape how the party responds to investigations of President Donald Trump during the remainder of his term.

Jordan told colleagues he was prepared to keep the party united and counter Democratic tactics, citing his experience leading Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee. He is expected to face House Majority Leader Steve Scalise; Mike Johnson has told staff he will not seek the minority leader position. Jordan’s failed 2023 bid for speaker drew opposition from moderates, some of whom have since lost their seats.
