## Key points

- Democrats took both chambers of Congress.
- Kimmel urged Trump to resign after the Republican losses.
- He also answered a White House attack on his ratings.

## Summary

Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in the US midterm elections, prompting Jimmy Kimmel to call on President Donald Trump to resign during his Wednesday monologue. The result matters because it marks a major electoral setback for Republicans, whom Trump had said would have won more races if he had been on the ballot.

Kimmel argued that Trump’s influence was already present throughout the campaign and mocked his shifting party affiliations. He also responded to a White House statement calling him a “no-talent loser” with “tanking ratings”, noting that similar remarks had been issued before; the article reports no move by Trump to resign.
