Joao Pedro a central figure – player ratings for Chelsea v Brighton

BBC Sport · 6 hours ago

Chelsea beat Brighton 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller at Stamford Bridge, with Cole Palmer's curling effort proving the winner as Xabi Alonso's side maintained their perfect start to the season. Joao Pedro was a key figure at both ends, scoring for Chelsea before turning the ball into his own net, in a match that also saw new signing Emiliano Martinez make his Chelsea debut in goal.

Romeo Lavia, Pedro Neto and Joao Pedro put Chelsea 3-0 up before Malick Yalcouye and Joao Pedro's own goal cut the deficit for Brighton, after which Palmer restored the two-goal cushion. Pascal Gross headed in a stoppage-time consolation for Brighton in the 96th minute. BBC Sport's player ratings rated Palmer, Joao Pedro and debutant goalkeeper Martinez highest for Chelsea with 8s, while several Brighton defenders, including Bart Verbruggen, Olivier Boscagli and Lewis Dunk, received lower marks of 5 for a shaky defensive display.
