## Key points

- Manchin says Democratic socialists are gaining ground in his former party.
- He left the Democrats and registered as an independent in May 2024.
- He points to recent high-profile wins, including Zohran Mamdani’s.

## Summary

Former West Virginia senator Joe Manchin says Democratic socialists are gaining influence in the Democratic Party and criticises longtime Democrats for staying silent. His comments reflect concern among moderates about the party’s direction and the prospects for finding common ground.

Manchin made the remarks on Sean Hannity’s podcast, saying the party had shifted from liberal to progressive and then towards Democratic Socialists of America. He became an independent in May 2024 after criticising extremism in both major parties. He also suggested socialist candidates could make gains in strongly Democratic areas, while noting that competitive House races may hinge on more politically mixed districts; New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was cited as a high-profile electoral success for the movement.
