Joey Barton, the former footballer, will remain in custody until his trial next year after a judge rejected his renewed application for bail. The 44-year-old was due to stand trial at Liverpool crown court last week on a charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, but the case has been adjourned and his trial pushed back to March, meaning he will have spent a full year on remand since his arrest.

Barton appeared via video link from HMP Liverpool at a hearing where Judge David Potter refused bail, with a pre-trial hearing now set for 11 December. He is accused of attacking Kevin Lynch, 51, at Huyton and Prescot golf club on 8 March after the pair had been drinking together, with Lynch said to have suffered serious eye injuries. Barton, who won one England cap and played for clubs including Manchester City, Newcastle, Rangers and Marseille before moving into management at Fleetwood and Bristol Rovers, is due to face trial exactly a year after the alleged incident.
