Apple TV has released the first trailer for Matchbox The Movie during its San Diego Comic-Con panel, marking the second Mattel Studios film adaptation of the year after Barbie. Led by John Cena, the film takes a very different tone from Barbie's satirical approach, instead leaning into Fast & Furious-style action as Cena plays an undercover CIA agent drawn into a globe-trotting conspiracy alongside childhood friends who once bonded over Matchbox toy cars.

The project has been in development since 2022, with Extraction director Sam Hargrave joining in 2024 and filming taking place in 2025. The cast includes Jessica Biel, Teyonah Parris, Sam Richardson and Danai Gurira alongside Cena, giving the toy-based film a notably strong lineup. It follows June's Masters of the Universe as Mattel's second cinematic release this year, though it appears aimed more at filling the gap left by the dormant Fast & Furious franchise than chasing the awards-season success Barbie achieved. Matchbox The Movie is set to premiere on Apple TV on 9 October.
