## Key points

- John Legend will campaign with Amy Acton in Dayton.
- Ramaswamy’s advert has drawn bipartisan criticism.
- His campaign has spent $4 million airing it.

## Summary

Singer John Legend will appear with Ohio Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton at a Dayton rally on 26 October, as she campaigns against Republican Vivek Ramaswamy. His support comes amid backlash over a Ramaswamy campaign advert that uses claims by Acton’s estranged mother to dispute her account of childhood abuse and homelessness.

Acton says she has not spoken to her mother since she was 12, when officials removed her from her mother’s custody. Records cited by Acton’s campaign include a police report, court documents and a sheriff’s report concerning her stepfather. Republican Governor Mike DeWine called the advert deeply troubling and urged the campaign to remove it; Ramaswamy’s campaign has spent $4 million airing it in the final week, while Donald Trump and JD Vance have defended it.
