Calvin Hayes, the British keyboardist and drummer who co-founded the 1980s pop band Johnny Hates Jazz, has died at the age of 63. According to former bandmates Clark Datchler and Mike Nocito, Hayes collapsed at his home in Washington earlier in the week and died on Thursday. The pair shared a statement on the band's official social media accounts describing themselves as "utterly shocked and deeply saddened", and said they had spoken privately with others who knew him before making the news public.

Hayes was born in London on 27 November 1962 and formed Johnny Hates Jazz in 1986 with Datchler and Nocito, signing to Virgin Records. The group broke through in 1987 with the single "Shattered Dreams", and their debut album "Turn Back The Clock" topped the UK Albums Chart. After Datchler left, ex-Cure bassist Phil Thornalley joined, but the follow-up record "Tall Stories" failed to chart and the band split. They reunited in 2009, though Hayes departed the following year.
