Katarina Johnson-Thompson improved her prospects of a heptathlon medal at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham with a strong high jump display. The British athlete, whose fitness had been uncertain after injury problems and limited competition, moved up to 10th after clearing 1.83m, though she remains outside the medal positions.

Johnson-Thompson’s high jump was surpassed only by leader Adrianna Sulek-Schubert and Ireland’s Kate O’Connor, following a 14.00-second 100m hurdles run that ranked 15th. She trails Sulek-Schubert by 141 points and the podium by 80, with shot put and 200m still to come on Friday before the remaining events on Saturday; team-mate Jade O’Dowda is 12th.
