Jon Bernthal’s ‘The Sopranos’ Prequel Is Officially a 10/10 Streaming Hit

Collider · 5 hours ago

Jon Bernthal's 2021 film The Many Saints of Newark, a prequel to The Sopranos, is drawing renewed attention on streaming years after underperforming at release. The film suffered from its simultaneous theatrical and HBO Max release during a difficult period for cinemas, which limited its audience at the time, but its profile has since grown as Bernthal's career has taken off with roles in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, prompting fans to revisit his earlier work.

Directed by Alan Taylor from a script by David Chase and Lawrence Konner, the film is set in Newark during the racial unrest of the late 1960s and early 1970s and follows Dickie Moltisanti's influence on a young Tony Soprano. Bernthal played Johnny Soprano, alongside a cast including Alessandro Nivola, Michael Gandolfini, Leslie Odom Jr., Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen and the late Ray Liotta in a dual role.
