Jon Cypher, the American actor best known for playing scheming police chief Fletcher Daniels on all seven seasons of "Hill Street Blues" and Prince Charming opposite Julie Andrews in the first live television production of "Cinderella," has died at his home in Central Point, Oregon. He was 94, and passed away on 3 August, his family announced. His career spanned television, film and Broadway across more than five decades.

Cypher's breakthrough came in the 1957 CBS broadcast of "Cinderella," which drew over 107 million viewers and more than 60% of American households. He went on to appear in films including "Valdez Is Coming" (1971) and "Masters of the Universe" (1987), played Brigadier Gen. Marcus Craig in the sitcom "Major Dad," and had recurring roles in "Knots Landing" and "Dynasty." On Broadway, he originated roles including Don Quixote in "Man of La Mancha" and Thomas Jefferson in "1776," having made his debut there in 1958 after studying at Brooklyn College.
