## Key points

- Stewart dubbed Trump’s remarks an “I Had It Cleaned” speech.
- Trump spoke at the Reflecting Pool on the eve of the midterm elections.
- The pool’s renovation had been troubled by algae and a peeling liner.

## Summary

Jon Stewart mocked Donald Trump’s election-eve speech at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool after the president devoted much of his appearance on 2 November to its reopening and renovation. On The Daily Show, Stewart played clips of Trump discussing the pool, paused in apparent disbelief and briefly walked off the set. Returning to his desk, he called it Trump’s “I Had It Cleaned” speech, a reference to Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered from the memorial’s steps in 1963.

The White House had presented Trump’s appearance as a closing argument before the US midterm elections. Trump instead spent considerable time describing the pool’s blue surface, plumbing and surrounding landscaping, while also discussing other projects in Washington. The renovation had faced problems, including algae and a peeling liner. Stewart’s joke focused on the gap between the setting’s historical significance and the practical details that dominated the president’s remarks.
