## Key points

- A judge paused work on Trump’s proposed arch for 14 days.
- The court combined several lawsuits challenging the project.
- Planning approval came after a lengthy hearing and strong opposition.

## Summary

The latest development is that a federal judge has combined the lawsuits challenging Donald Trump’s proposed Washington arch, bringing together cases filed by Washington DC, Virginia, Vietnam veterans and an architectural historian. Judge Tanya Chutkan also ordered construction halted for 14 days, hours after the project received final planning approval.

The National Capital Planning Commission approved the 250-foot arch by 8 votes to 4 following a nine-and-a-half-hour hearing, where many speakers objected to its proximity to Arlington National Cemetery. The cost and funding remain unclear, with estimates reaching $100 million; opponents say Congress has neither approved nor funded the project.
