Sony has released a first-look trailer for Jumanji: Open World, the fifth and final instalment in the Jumanji film series, which flips the franchise's premise by sending its video-game avatars into the real world instead of pulling players into the game. The film reunites the returning cast of avatar actors from Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level, with director Jake Kasdan back at the helm, building on a series that has previously proven a major box-office draw.

In the new instalment, the avatars find themselves navigating real-world dangers while retaining video-game abilities such as respawning after apparent mishaps, including one character being hit by a truck and returning unharmed. The story again sees ordinary people transformed into the familiar avatars: Spencer's mother Janice becomes Dr Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), his young nephew Tyson becomes Mouse (Kevin Hart), Spencer himself becomes Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan), and a restaurant chef named Donatas becomes Shelly (Jack Black). Jumanji: Open World is scheduled for an exclusive theatrical release on Christmas Day this year.
