Klopp condemns racist attacks on Germany’s diverse football squad

The Guardian ·

Jürgen Klopp condemned claims on social media that Germany’s national football team are “not white enough”, calling them nonsense and idiocy. He said he would not give such views attention and argued that players’ mutual respect in the dressing room showed how people could work together without prejudice.

The debate followed Germany’s 1-0 Nations League defeat by Greece, the first time Greece had beaten Germany, and included racist and offensive comments about the squad’s diversity. Klopp said the players at his camp, including several with migrant backgrounds, were strongly united. The criticism echoes repeated attacks on the team’s ethnic makeup by members of the far-right AfD; Klopp was speaking before Germany’s match against Serbia.
