Jury awards teens $550K after Oregon amusement park ride left them hanging upside down: report
A jury has awarded $550,000 (£275,000 each) to two teenage girls after they were left dangling upside down for nearly 30 minutes when a ride malfunctioned at Oaks Park, an amusement park in Portland, Oregon. The verdict, reached by a 10-2 majority this week, found the park and the ride's manufacturer, Zamperla, liable over the June 2024 incident, which drew widespread attention after video of trapped riders circulated on social media.
The malfunction occurred on the AtmosFEAR ride, which suspended around 30 passengers upside down before emergency crews were called in to rescue them. Oaks Park, one of the oldest continuously operating amusement parks in the United States, faced the lawsuit from the two teenagers, who were each awarded $275,000 in damages over the ordeal.
